Harriet Beecher Stowe, Author
Mandarin Community Club
Jacksonville, Florida
Oil on Linen

Harriet Beecher Stowe, famed author of Uncle Tom's Cabin, was a 15 year winter resident of Mandarin, Florida. During an 1868 trip to Orange Park, Florida, to visit her son, Frederick, she saw Mandarin for the first time. She rowed across the river to pick up her mail in Mandarin and was immediately charmed by the area. She later bought acreage on the river where she established a school for Mandarin's children, both black and white.
